The Lives Saved Tool

The Lives Saved Tool (LiST) - developed by the Institute for International Programs at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - is a tool which estimates the impact of scaling up maternal, newborn, and child health, and nutrition (MNCH&N) interventions. LiST is housed within Spectrum, a software package maintained by Avenir Health. Users - including NGOs, government partners, researchers, project planners and graduate students - have been using the model for over 10 years. The LiST team regularly updates the model to incorporate the most recent evidence available from the scientific literature and household survey data, ensuring that results are as recent and accurate as possible.

Under the RADAR project, Global Affairs Canada has funded LiST Online, which is a an online tool with most of the same functionalities as the desktop version, but designed to be user-friendly. Users no longer have to download the software - they can use the tool entirely online. Visual cues and guided walk-throughs allow them to quickly and easily access the data contained in LiST , identify interventions with high potential for impact, and to create projections for countries of interest.

LiST for strategic planning

Training in Maputo, Mozambique on the potential applications of LiST for nutrition. Task team members of the Plataforma Nacional de Saude Maternal e das Crianças e Nutrição (PNSMCN - National Platform for Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition) of Mozambique’s National Health Observatory attended this training to re-familiarize themselves with the tool, and to look at ways that LiST can be used to analyze performance and plan strategically in Mozambique’s nutrition sector.
